Flavours of Spain

The flavours of Spain have deepened with two UK exclusives from Galicia in Northern Spain.

The Pedralonga Barrica is Galicia’s first limited production biodynamic wine, made from Albariño grapes, which are uniquely suited to the Atlantic climate of the Rías Baixas region and handpicked from 25 year old vines. Only 1,200 bottles are produced each year by the Alfonso family, which has followed traditional lunar phases and biodynamic principles for generations of winemaking.

For red wine lovers, the Pagos de Galir Selección Rosa Rivero is considered by many leading experts to be an essential addition to any collection or cellar. A multiple award winner, including the gold medal at the International Wine Salon 2005, the Pagos de Galir is made from Mencía grapes handpicked from Galicia’s sun-soaked Valdeorras region and was recently awarded 86 points by the Peñin guide of Spanish wines.

I'm a big fan of Spanish wine, especially Riojas, but the two wines described above impressed me greatly.

Spanish Wine

With over 2.9 million acres of Spanish dedicated to producing wine in Spain, the Spanish are now the largest wine producer in acerage, and that includes Italy and France. But Spain is still only the third biggest producer in terms of wine quantity. This is due to a low yeild. Dry, infertile soil is mainly to blame.

There are a large number of wine-producing regions in Spain, with Rioja and Priorato, being the best known internationally. Spanish vineyards make red and white wine..

For a long time, Spanish winemaking has been very rustic and steeped in tradition. The use of oak with some wines, including white wines, with wine left to sit in barrels for up to two decades is common, thus Spanish wine has become known for very distinct fllavours. And Spanish wine is very distinct. A good Rioja cannot be confused with any other wine. What I really like, thgough, is the fact that Spanish wine is so complimentary to Spanish food. The two are a perfect match. That is pretty cool, I think...
