Australian Wines
Australian winemakers struggled to establish their vineyards
at the start. But they persevered and now Australian wine is
established right at the top of the poularity wine charts. Australian
wine now enjoys a huge share of the international market and
the success is very well deserved. A story I particularly like
is the one that tells the tale of the Vienna Exhibition in 1873
when French judges were tasting various wines blind and highly
praised a selection of wines produced in Victoria, but when
the judges discovered they had inadvertently heaped praise on
an Australian wine, they quickly withdraw from the competition
protesting they had been hoodwinked!! They argued that wines
of that quality must clearly be French. But, despite the French
judges best efforts, Australian wines continued to win high
honors. Another lovely story tells of Australian Shiraz competing
in the 1878 Paris Exhibition where the wine was was said to
be similar to Château Margaux. The taste was said to complete
the trinity of perfection. And another story is when an Australian
wine won a gold medal at the 1882 Bordeaux International Exhibition.
But, alas, a period of devastation for the Australian wine industry
began when the phylloxera epidemic took hold. But, being hardy
Australians, they climbed back in the saddle, regrouped and
have since developed into one of the world's biggest wine producers
in both the quantity and quality of wine.
