Australian Wines
Australian winemakers faced an up-hill battle at the start
of their wine production.Thankfully, they persevered and have
sinec achieve great success and are now internationally renown
for producing a host of very popular wines. A telling story
is that in 1873 at the Vienna Exhibition, French judges, tasting
blind, praised a selection of wines produced in Victoria, only
to withdraw in protest once the provenance of the wine was made
known to them. They argued that wines of that quality must clearly
be French. But, despite the French judges best efforts, Australian
wines continued to win high honors. In particular, there is
the story of the Australian Shiraz, when, whilst competing in
the 1878 Paris Exhibition it was said to be similar to Château
Margaux when ther taste was said to complete its trinity of
perfection. And another story is when an Australian wine won
a gold medal at the 1882 Bordeaux International Exhibition.
But, alas, a period of devastation for the Australian wine industry
began when the phylloxera epidemic took hold. But, being hardy
Australians, they climbed back in the saddle, regrouped and
have since developed into one of the world's biggest wine producers
in both the quantity and quality of wine.
